Six months of lead time: Louisiana's rule for outside programs
Louisiana stands out for how early it wants to hear from a school headquartered in another state. Its Board of Nursing rule, LAC 46:XLVII.3539, covers every nursing program, graduate or undergraduate, whose administrative home is outside Louisiana, and none may teach a course or run a clinical rotation there until the Board says yes. The school's request names each agency and unit it plans to use and arrives packed with curriculum, syllabi, its catalog, a survey of every clinical facility, forms on each instructor and its exam results, a full six months ahead.
Three school-level credentials also matter to the Board: approval in the home state, regional accreditation, and a national nursing accreditor it recognizes. Approval, once granted, runs for up to three years before a renewal petition. Graduate students' placements are then reported on the Board's spreadsheet within a fortnight of the first clinical day.
Louisiana nurses deciding whether to apply
For a Louisiana RN, the green path is the online RN-BSN. The Rivier DNP sits in yellow, Rivier's sign of limiting criteria, so the Program Director is your first conversation; doctoral work also calls for a clean RN license issued by the project's state, with an APRN license added for the Professional Practice track. Neither NP track, nor the Education or Leadership MSN, is open to Louisiana residents under the guide.
If you picture living in New Orleans or Baton Rouge while training in a state the guide accepts, ask Rivier first. Whether it could happen depends on how Rivier applies its admission rules and on your holding a license in that practicum state, and nothing on the chart says such an arrangement exists.
Relocating to Louisiana during a Rivier program
An enrolled NP student bound for Lafayette or Shreveport should treat the red cell as a practicum question to answer before moving day, not after. Rivier's Handbook wants the Dean told, on paper, 90 or more days before any post-acceptance change of state, and it assigns the barrier research to you.

Licensing, practice and why Rivier students choose us
Louisiana's multistate RN licenses have been valid across the compact since July 1, 2019, while the APRN Compact remains unadopted there. Can Louisiana residents enroll in Rivier's online FNP?
No. Rivier's State Guide marks the FNP red for Louisiana, as an MSN and as a certificate, and Rivier's legend ties red to prohibitive barriers that rule out acceptance. The PMHNP column matches, as do Nursing Education and Leadership, leaving the RN-BSN as Louisiana's green option and the DNP as a yellow call to the Program Director.
What does the yellow DNP rating mean for a Louisiana nurse?
Yellow signals limiting criteria. Rivier's key sends you to the Program Director, who can explain whether the doctoral program can work in your circumstances and what it would take. Read yellow as a conversation that has to happen before you apply, never as an approval.
Does a Louisiana license help if I move there as a Rivier student?
It settles the licensing side only. A Louisiana RN license meets Rivier's rule that you be licensed in the practicum state, and because Louisiana is a compact state, multistate licenses from other party states are valid there too; ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator which one Rivier will take. It leaves the State Guide's red for the NP tracks untouched, because that color reflects Rivier's position on Louisiana, not your license.
I'm moving to Louisiana mid-program. Who do I tell?
The Dean comes first: Rivier's Handbook requires graduate students to report a post-acceptance change of state in writing no less than 90 days out. Tell your Program Director and Rivier's practicum coordinator at the same time, since Louisiana is red for the NP tracks and your practicum plan is what the move puts at risk.
