Rivier post-master's certificates: shorter plans, the same practicums
Rivier University's post-master's certificates in FNP, PMHNP, AG-ACNP and Nursing Education trim the coursework your first master's already covers but keep the practicum courses, and the graduate Practicum Placement Policy applies in full: you identify a qualified preceptor. A short certificate can bring your first practicum very early, so the search usually starts before your first class.

The same placement rule as the MSN
Certificate students secure their own preceptors. The Practicum Placement Policy in Rivier's 2026-2027 Nursing Student Handbook covers every graduate nursing student, and the FNP and PMHNP placement sections carry headings that name both the MSN track and the post-master's certificate. So the Handbook's sentence, "It is the student's responsibility to identify a qualified preceptor," reaches you exactly as it reaches an MSN student.
Rivier's 2026 certificate sheet notes that practicums can be completed in your own geographic area. Faculty and the Clinical Practicum Coordinator lend a hand in spotting a willing clinician, graduate faculty rule on whether the site is appropriate, and Rivier's agreement with that site must be signed before a single hour counts.
If you already practice as an APRN, your professional network is a real asset. The Handbook encourages students to put forward clinicians they know through work, as long as each one meets the preceptor rules for the new population.

All four start in September, January or May, and 14-week terms run once per semester in fall, spring and summer. Admission asks for graduate Advanced Pharmacology within five years; the FNP, PMHNP and Nursing Education certificates also ask for Advanced Pathophysiology within ten years and Advanced Health Assessment, with waivers considered for practicing NPs.
How your first master's shapes the credit count
The wide credit ranges come from what your earlier study already covers. The FNP certificate lists NURS 510 and NURS 512 only for students who haven't completed them, which is how it can be as short as 19 credits or as long as 43. A Nursing Education applicant whose first master's had no clinical component picks up extra courses.
The practicum courses are the part that doesn't shrink. Each NP certificate's minimum course list includes all three practicums for its population, so plan for the same preceptor searches an MSN student makes, one per semester. The Handbook's hour rules for FNP and PMHNP, including 250 hours inside each practicum semester, sit under headings written for the track and the certificate together.
Any adjustment for prior supervised clinical work would show up on your Program of Studies, so ask the Program Director before planning around a smaller number. FNP certificate students also inherit the FNP hours conflict, 750 in the Handbook against 610 in the 2025-26 catalog, set out on 750 vs 610 FNP hours.
Why a certificate practicum can land in semester one
A short certificate compresses the calendar. Rivier's FNP certificate page gives about three semesters on average, and the FNP and PMHNP certificates each hold three practicum courses taken one after another, with later courses requiring earlier ones. In a three-semester plan, that means a practicum every semester, including the first.
Rivier's lead times don't compress with it. The Handbook wants the placement secured four months before the semester, sets August 1 and December 1 as absolute deadlines and gives the contract 30 days, and clinical requirements must sit in CastleBranch (myCB) four months before practicum courses. For a January start, both the search and the compliance file fall in the fall before you enroll; for a September start, they fall by early May.
Hit a cutoff with no confirmed preceptor, or with an unfinished compliance file, and Rivier asks you to push the practicum back one semester. The full sequence, including the older May 1 and September 1 dates on a 2018 Rivier form, is on Rivier's placement deadlines.
Preceptors by certificate
Each certificate borrows its preceptor standard from the matching MSN track, so the rules below are the same ones MSN students work to.
- FNP: a physician (MD or DO) or FNP practicing outpatient family medicine for at least two years; physician assistants may cover days but not lead. Details on FNP preceptor requirements.
- PMHNP: a psychiatrist or PMH-certified nurse with at least two years, any age group, and no more than 300 hours with a telehealth prescriber. See PMHNP preceptor requirements.
- AG-ACNP: a hospitalist for Practicum I, then critical care preceptors (intensivists, other physicians or AG-ACNPs), with no telehealth. See AG-ACNP preceptor requirements.
- Nursing Education: for
NURS 559P, a master's-prepared RN who teaches as a nurse educator, whether in a hospital or on a faculty. The MSN Nursing Education guide covers that practicum.
Rivier's State Guide columns for FNP, PMHNP and Education cover the certificate as well as the MSN. The guide has no AG-ACNP column, so AG-ACNP certificate applicants living outside New Hampshire should ask the Program Director before applying.
Conflicts to check before you enroll
Rivier's certificate documents disagree in several places. None of them changes who finds the preceptor, but each can change how many semesters you plan for.
- Length: the certificate sheet says about 1.5 years for FNP, PMHNP and Nursing Education; the FNP and PMHNP pages say 3 to 6 semesters; the Nursing Education page says 5 to 7 semesters while also giving three on average.
- FNP format: the 2025-26 catalog describes both a traditional hybrid option and a low-residency option for the FNP certificate, but Rivier's on-campus FNP web addresses now forward to the online page. Intensive dates are on Rivier's campus intensives.
- PMHNP page: the certificate page still advertises a January 19, 2026 start, which has already passed, and its program-of-study paragraph describes the FNP certificate instead.
- Nursing Education courses: the 2026 sheet includes
NURS 615, which the catalog's minimum list leaves out.
When sources disagree, your Program of Studies and the Program Director decide. Raise each point at admission so the plan you sign is the plan you follow.

Questions Rivier students ask
Can I add Rivier's FNP certificate if I'm already a nurse practitioner?
Yes. The certificate is designed for master's-prepared nurses, and Rivier considers prerequisite waivers for practicing NPs. Admission otherwise asks for graduate Advanced Pharmacology within five years, Advanced Pathophysiology within ten and Advanced Health Assessment. Your credit total depends on whether earlier study already covers FNP theory courses like NURS 510 or NURS 512.
Do certificate students complete fewer clinical hours at Rivier?
The course lists suggest not. Each NP certificate includes all three practicums for its population, and the Handbook's FNP and PMHNP hour rules name the certificate alongside the MSN. Any reduction for earlier supervised clinical work would appear on your Program of Studies, so confirm your number with the Program Director before building a schedule around it.
Is Rivier's AG-ACNP certificate shorter than the AG-ACNP MSN?
Yes. The certificate requires at least 19 credits over five semesters, which the sheet describes as 2.5 years, against 48 credits and an estimated 3.5 to 5 years for the MSN. It keeps both skills labs and all three acute care practicums, with eight days on campus instead of ten.
How many clinical hours does Rivier's Nursing Education certificate need?
Rivier publishes no clock hours for NURS 559P Advanced Clinical Education Practicum. The catalog has you teaching across didactic, clinical and lab settings while a nurse educator precepts you, with the NURS 559S seminar running alongside. Ask your course faculty how hours are counted before you agree a schedule with your preceptor.
Can I switch between the hybrid and online FNP certificate?
The Handbook treats a move between the Rivier Online Program and the hybrid track as possible only when space allows, and it is not automatic. The 2025-26 catalog still describes both formats for the FNP certificate, even though Rivier's on-campus FNP addresses now lead to the online page, so ask the Program Director which format your cohort follows.
