Rivier practicum placement deadlines: August 1, December 1 and the older dates
Rivier University's 2026-2027 Nursing Student Handbook treats August 1 for fall and December 1 for spring as the absolute placement deadlines for every MSN practicum course, recommends having the site secured four months before term, and budgets 30 days for the contract. An older Rivier form prints earlier dates. Here is how the two line up and how to plan around both.

The current dates
The graduate placement policy in the Handbook (pp. 73-74) gives four numbers that govern your timeline. Treat them as the rule for 2026-27.
- Four months: how far ahead of the practicum semester Rivier recommends having your placement secured.
- August 1: the absolute cutoff for fall placements, for every MSN practicum course.
- December 1: the absolute cutoff for spring placements, for every MSN practicum course.
- 30 days: the time the Handbook allows for the contract between Rivier and your site.
The same pages spell out what happens at the cutoff. Anyone who arrives there without a confirmed site, or with an incomplete record file, is asked to hold the practicum for one semester. Your clinical requirements run on a clock of their own too: graduate items belong in CastleBranch by the same four-month mark, which is also when Rivier would like the site settled.
The older dates, and which to follow
Rivier's older practicum paperwork, dated 2018 and still online, runs on a different calendar. The two documents conflict, and for 2026-27 the current Handbook leads.

Use August 1 and December 1 as your deadlines, and confirm them for your term with the Clinical Practicum Coordinator. Keep the older twelve-week figure as a planning signal: each site reviews contracts at its own pace, and sending your request near the four-month mark covers the 30-day window and a slower signer too.
Working back from the first day of the semester
No practicum hour may fall before the semester opens, and none counts until the coordinator has verified your paperwork and the signed contract. Mapped onto Rivier's 2026-27 academic calendar, the milestones land roughly as follows.

Reading this in late September 2026 with a spring practicum ahead? The four-month mark has slipped by, but December 1 has not. That is tight rather than closed, provided the preceptor and site come together soon, because the contract alone uses 30 of the days that remain. Any later and the cutoff and the contract clock begin to collide.
What deferral does to your plan
Deferral is the Handbook's answer to a missed cutoff, and its effect can reach past a single term. FNP and PMHNP students must complete 250 hours inside each practicum semester with no banking, so a late first practicum pushes back the ones behind it; the 250 hours per semester guide explains that rule. The 2025-26 catalog schedules the acute care practicums by term, with NURS 638P and NURS 640P in fall and NURS 639P in spring, so ask your Program Director how a missed fall start would shift your sequence.
Any change to your practicum term also means a revised Program of Studies. Graduation happens only three times a year at Rivier (January 2, September 2 and the May Commencement), so a deferral can move your graduation date as well. Delayed graduation covers how students plan around that.
The records clock runs alongside
A confirmed preceptor is only half of what the cutoff checks; the Handbook also wants a complete record file. Graduate clinical requirements belong in your myCB account four months ahead, along with the RN license covering your practicum state, an updated resume, plus the Student Information Sheet for Clinical Experience that Rivier expects from each graduate student.
Several items keep fixed dates of their own. The flu shot is due each year by September 30, the Centralized Clinical Placement orientation comes around every August, and the background check is redone annually before the academic year begins. Gaps in your records can pause a graduate practicum until the documents arrive, so let these dates set your calendar alongside the placement cutoffs. How we work to Rivier's earlier clock
We plan every Rivier placement to the four-month mark, not to August 1 or December 1. By then your preceptor has been found, checked against your track's rules and has handed over the paperwork your Preceptor Request Form needs, with room left for a 30-day contract and a slower site review.
When a student reaches us close to a cutoff, we switch to deadline pace: we search several leads in parallel, favor sites that can contract quickly, and keep the coordinator's timeline in view throughout. Every approval still belongs to Rivier's faculty and coordinator; we make sure your packet reaches them complete and early. Questions Rivier students ask
Is August 1 the deadline to find a preceptor or to finish everything?
The Handbook calls August 1 the absolute deadline for fall placement in all MSN practicum courses, and students still missing a confirmed site or complete records then are asked to defer. Treat it as the date by which site, preceptor and records should all be settled, and aim for the four-month mark instead.
Does Rivier's May 1 placement deadline still apply?
The May 1 (fall) and September 1 (spring) dates come from Rivier's older 2018 practicum form. The 2026-2027 Handbook sets August 1 and December 1, and the current Handbook leads. Confirm the dates for your term with the Clinical Practicum Coordinator, and keep in mind the older form's warning that processing could take twelve weeks or more.
Is there a summer practicum placement deadline at Rivier?
The Handbook names only fall and spring cutoffs. If your plan of study schedules a summer practicum, which runs May 10 to August 26 in 2027, ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator for the date that applies and plan on the same four-month lead the Handbook recommends.
Can I start clinical hours early to get ahead?
No. Rivier's Handbook bars hours before the semester's first day, and none count until the Clinical Practicum Coordinator has checked off your documents and contract. FNP and PMHNP students also cannot carry surplus hours from one practicum into the next, so starting early gains nothing.
What if my site contract is not signed by the first day?
Your hours cannot count until the coordinator confirms the contract is in place. With 30 days budgeted for contracts, a late start on paperwork eats into a semester that already has to hold 250 hours for FNP and PMHNP students. Tell the coordinator and your course faculty as soon as you see the delay.
