Maryland nurses in Rivier University's graduate programs
Maryland shows green in every graduate column of Rivier University's State Guide. A nurse living around Baltimore, or on the Maryland edge of greater Washington, can enroll in Rivier's online NP tracks and look for clinical sites close to home. Training in Maryland as a student
Maryland law already makes room for you. Section 8-301(d)(2) of the Health Occupations article lifts the licensing requirement for someone enrolled in an accredited graduate APRN program, for the practice that program involves. Rivier sets a stricter test in its Handbook: hold an RN license that is good in the state of your site.
Compact membership closes that gap for most Marylanders. The state is in the Nurse Licensure Compact, and COMAR 10.27.01.03(B) recognizes the multistate privilege, subject to Maryland law. MBON's education pages handle out-of-state programs as a question for licensure applicants rather than a clinical approval step. The Maryland Higher Education Commission does ask out-of-state colleges to register before teaching Marylanders online, but SARA participants like Rivier are exempt.
The review that comes at the end
One Maryland rule reaches past graduation. Before the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) will certify anyone as an advanced practice nurse, it must have reviewed and approved the program that person finished. Programs absent from its approved list come forward through a Program Approval Form, and only the school can submit that form.
So put a question to the Program Director in your first year: is Rivier's FNP or PMHNP track on MBON's list, and if it is not, when will the form go in? An early answer protects your certification timeline and your first NP job in Maryland.
Full practice after mentorship
AANP counts Maryland as a full practice state. Newly certified NPs attest to an 18-month mentorship, with either a physician or an experienced certified NP, and afterward practice on their own authority, so a seasoned Maryland NP can precept without a physician in the picture.
Qualifications come from Rivier, not Maryland. An FNP student's preceptor is a physician (MD or DO) or an FNP with a two-year record in outpatient family practice; a PMHNP student's is a psychiatrist, or a nurse holding PMH certification, with the same seasoning (PMHNP preceptor rules). Big employers across the Baltimore and Washington metros include Luminis Health, the University of Maryland Medical System, Johns Hopkins Medicine, MedStar Health and LifeBridge Health. Each writes its own student rules.
Maryland's preceptor tax credit
Maryland rewards some unpaid NP teaching through the tax code. Under Tax-General section 10-739, the Nurse Practitioner Preceptorship Tax Credit is open to NPs and physicians who precept NP students without compensation. Eligibility rests on volume and place: three or more rotations, none shorter than 90 hours, in community-based settings where the state health department has found a workforce shortage.
Two limits matter for a Rivier student. The statute speaks of students enrolled in a program recognized by Maryland's Board, and the credit is scheduled to end June 30, 2030.
Licenses and the flights to Nashua
No APRN Compact law has passed in Maryland, so your eventual NP license will be Maryland's alone. On the Rivier side, Nashua calls you back several times: the FNP's campus days total nine, split over three intensives, while the PMHNP cohort convenes for three weekends and the AG-ACNP track needs ten days; 2026-27 FNP dates are on the campus intensives page. Can Maryland residents enroll in Rivier's online PMHNP?
They can. Green in the PMHNP column applies to the MSN and to the post-master's certificate alike. Plan for three campus weekends with your cohort in Nashua, and for finding your own psychiatric preceptor under Rivier's Practicum Placement Policy.
Is a Maryland multistate license enough for a Maryland site?
It is. Rivier's test is simply that your RN license works in the site's state, and a Maryland multistate license does. Nurses whose primary residence is a different compact state can rely on their own multistate license too, because Maryland's regulations honor the privilege.
Will my preceptor receive Maryland's tax credit?
Only if every condition lines up: an NP or physician precepting unpaid, a minimum of three community-based rotations lasting 90 hours or longer, a shortage area designated by the health department, and a student in a program the Board recognizes. Your preceptor should confirm eligibility with the Maryland Department of Health.
Can I do a Rivier practicum in Washington, D.C.?
Rivier's State Guide does not list the District of Columbia, so there is no color to rely on. Talk to the Program Director before you approach anyone there, and expect to need an RN license valid in the District if the idea goes ahead.
