Rivier MSN Leadership in Health Systems Management and its practicum

A track that mixes nursing and business

The MSN in Leadership in Health Systems Management is for registered nurses moving into management and system roles. Rivier lists it at 36 credits on the standard path (the program page gives 36 to 42 by entry path), about two years of study, with starts in September, January and May. The whole track is online.

Two course rhythms run side by side. Nursing courses last 14 weeks, as in Rivier's other graduate tracks, while the business courses move in 7-week terms. That matters for planning. The practicum is a nursing course, so plan it on the semester calendar and against Rivier's semester placement deadlines, even if much of your other work moves in shorter blocks.

The practicum is also where the program stops being something you can finish alone at a keyboard. You need a nurse leader who will let you into their meetings, projects and decisions, and Rivier's graduate Practicum Placement Policy makes finding that person your job.

A placement shaped around your goals

The 2025-26 catalog says leadership practicum placements are based on each student's interests, goals and learning needs. In practice the search starts with a question only you can answer: what kind of leader do you want to become? A nurse manager running a unit, a director overseeing several departments and a leader in quality or operations offer very different semesters.

The Handbook's preceptor rule is broad enough to allow all of those. It calls for an RN holding a master's, accepts business as the master's field, and requires that the person work in nurse leadership. A chief nursing officer with an MBA qualifies on paper just as a nurse manager with an MSN does. The preceptor guide for Education and Leadership sets this rule beside the educator rule.

Because graduate faculty decide whether a site suits the course, describe your goals to them early and bring them a preceptor whose daily work matches what you told them.

License, records and the states Rivier accepts

Like every graduate practicum, the leadership placement needs an RN license for the state it happens in, CastleBranch (myCB) records on file four months before the course, and the Clinical Practicum Coordinator's confirmation of documents and contracts before any hours count.

Rivier's State Guide gives the Leadership track the same colors as the Education column: seven red states, among them California, Tennessee and Washington, and three yellow ones (Colorado, New York and South Dakota), where the guide says to call the Program Director. The State Guide page shows each state. The change-of-residence policy names the Leadership track too, so relocating after acceptance means notifying the Dean in writing no less than 90 days beforehand.

The Handbook treats a practicum grade under 84% as grounds for dismissal from the graduate track. That is one more reason to choose a preceptor who will give you real leadership work and regular, specific feedback.
