Rivier University NP practicums in Wisconsin
Rivier University's State Guide shows Wisconsin green for all five graduate programs. Wisconsin is also a state where schools of nursing based elsewhere, graduate programs among them, need the Board of Nursing's approval, and on September 1, 2026 a new law reshaped how its nurse practitioners are licensed. Both matter for a Wisconsin practicum.

Only pre-licensure is yellow. The guide lists no AG-ACNP column, so acute care applicants should confirm Wisconsin with the Program Director; see the guide explained.
Board approval for out-of-state schools
Wisconsin's approval requirement comes from Administrative Code N 1.06. DSPS Form 3067-OEE, revised in April 2026, spells out that a nursing school located in another state needs Wisconsin Board of Nursing approval, whether it prepares practical nurses or RNs, at the associate, bachelor's or graduate level; post-licensure bachelor's programs are named too. Schools that gain approval keep it by filing a self-evaluation on Form 3069OEE.
Anyone teaching or precepting a clinical in Wisconsin must be licensed there or hold the privilege to practice there.
Ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator about Rivier's Wisconsin approval for your course before you sign a preceptor; a willing Milwaukee or Madison clinician helps only once that is settled.
Wisconsin's new APRN license
Wisconsin's APRN law, 2025 Wisconsin Act 17, has been in force since September 1, 2026. The state now licenses APRNs by role (nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, nurse-midwife) and has moved existing APNP license holders over to the APRN license. An NP who wants to practice independently of a collaborating physician must apply for that separately and win Board approval. AANP still lists Wisconsin as reduced practice, built on physician collaboration, while noting the new law's start date.
In practice, your Wisconsin preceptor may work with a collaborating physician or, once approved, without one. Both can precept you if they meet Rivier's credential and two-year rules for your track; the PMHNP preceptor rules spell out the psychiatric track.
Where to look, and the license you need
Milwaukee-Waukesha and Madison lead Wisconsin's metros by population, with Green Bay and Appleton next. UW Health and Froedtert ThedaCare Health are two systems to research; Aspirus Health, Ascension Wisconsin and Advocate Health's Aurora Health Care are three more, and every one of them sets its own rules for visiting students.
Wisconsin has belonged to the current compact since January 2018, so a multistate Wisconsin license fits Rivier's practicum-state rule and serves for campus days in New Hampshire too. Does Wisconsin's approval rule apply to Rivier's online NP programs?
It reaches graduate programs. Form 3067-OEE lists graduate-level RN programs among those an out-of-state school needs Wisconsin Board approval for. That approval is the school's responsibility rather than the student's, so ask Rivier's Clinical Practicum Coordinator to confirm the status for your course before you commit to a Wisconsin site.
Must my Wisconsin preceptor hold a Wisconsin license?
Yes, or the privilege to practice in Wisconsin; the state applies that condition to every clinical faculty member and preceptor. Check your preceptor's license before the Preceptor Request Form goes in. Rivier then layers on its own standards, such as two or more years in practice and the right credential for your track.
Is Wisconsin green for Rivier's RN-BSN?
Yes. The RN-BSN is green for Wisconsin, and Rivier's 2026 RN-BSN sheet lists no clinical or practicum course. Wisconsin's out-of-state approval rule does name post-licensure bachelor's programs, but approval is a matter for Rivier rather than for students; the Program Director can answer questions about it.
Can I move to Wisconsin during Rivier's program?
Wisconsin is green for every graduate program, so a move is possible. Tell the Dean in writing at least 90 days ahead; the Handbook leaves the barrier-checking to you, and in Wisconsin the obvious barrier to check is the Board's approval of out-of-state schools.
