Choosing a preceptor placement service as a Rivier student
Rivier University leaves the preceptor search to its graduate nursing students, and a placement service can take that work off your hands. The right one works inside Rivier's rules from the first call: who may precept your track, which states Rivier accepts, what the Preceptor Request Form needs, and the fall and spring cutoffs. Here is what good help looks like and what to ask before you choose.

Judge a service by Rivier's rules, not by a directory
A long list of clinicians means little if few of them can precept a Rivier student. What matters is whether the person you are introduced to fits your track's requirements in the Nursing Student Handbook, because graduate faculty review every preceptor and site against them. A strong service knows these rules before it picks up the phone.

Questions to ask before you sign up
- Do you confirm a preceptor's license, certification and years in practice before introducing them?
- Is the preceptor in my area, in the state where I hold an RN license, and in a state that Rivier's State Guide clears for my program?
- Have you asked the organization whether it will sign a contract with Rivier, and who handles that?
- Will you gather the license copy, credentials and CV my Preceptor Request Form needs?
- Can this preceptor's schedule carry 250 hours inside one semester?
- What happens if the preceptor withdraws mid-semester or the site declines me?
- How do you handle telehealth and alternative-setting hours for my track?
Clear, specific answers to those questions tell you more than any sales page. Vague answers usually mean the service works the same way for every school, which leaves the Rivier-specific checks to you.
Warning signs
Some offers look helpful and still leave you with a site faculty cannot approve. Any one of these is a reason to ask harder questions before you commit.
- An FNP or PMHNP site in a state Rivier's State Guide shows in red: the West Coast trio of California, Oregon and Washington, plus Alabama, Iowa, Louisiana, Tennessee and Wyoming. Rivier cannot accept students there.
- A physician assistant offered as your primary FNP preceptor.
- FNP hours in a setting the Handbook does not approve: dermatology, orthopedics, surgical, sports medicine, ENT, GI, oncology, hospice or palliative care.
- Telehealth offered to an AG-ACNP student, or a PMHNP plan that relies on telehealth for more than 300 hours.
- Any promise that Rivier will approve the site, or that hours can start before the semester's first day.
Timing tells you a lot
Ask any service when it needs to hear from you, and listen for Rivier's calendar in the answer. Its Handbook asks for your placement to be in hand four months before the term, draws hard lines at August 1 for a fall practicum and December 1 for a spring one, and sets aside 30 days for the site contract. Clinical requirements are also due in CastleBranch four months before practicum courses.
A service that plans backward from those dates will ask for your semester in the first conversation and aim to confirm a preceptor well before the cutoff, leaving room for the contract. One that promises a match in days without asking about the contract or your records may deliver a name but not a start date. The placement deadlines page explains each date.

Questions Rivier students ask
Can I use a placement service for a Rivier practicum?
Rivier's Handbook places the job of identifying a qualified preceptor on the student and welcomes suggestions of clinicians students already know. However you find the preceptor, the same approval path follows: the Preceptor Request Form, a contract with the site, the coordinator's confirmation and graduate faculty's decision on the site.
Will Rivier approve a preceptor a service finds for me?
Approval depends on the preceptor and site, not on who found them. Every site is decided by graduate faculty, and the coordinator must clear the paperwork and contract before any hour counts. A preceptor who meets your track's rules, with a complete request, gives faculty what they need to decide.
Can a placement service find me a preceptor in any state?
Only where Rivier can accept you and where you hold an RN license. The State Guide marks eight states red for FNP and PMHNP, and Colorado, New York and South Dakota yellow, which means calling the Program Director first. Students who move also owe the Dean written notice 90 days ahead.
What should a placement service ask me first?
Your track and NURS course, where you plan to complete the practicum, the semester it starts, and how many hours you need. A service that skips those questions cannot screen preceptors against Rivier's rules or plan around Rivier's fall and spring cutoffs.
