Missouri residents in Rivier University's NP programs
Rivier University's State Guide shows Missouri green in all of its graduate columns, so nurses in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield or Columbia can take Rivier's online NP tracks and complete practicums at home. Two Missouri facts shape the search. NPs there never practice without a collaborating physician, and Missouri's tax break for teaching clinicians was written for doctors and PAs only.

Missouri's rules for students from other states
Missouri's State Board of Nursing writes its program rules, 20 CSR 2200-2, around the schools it approves itself. Section 335.081 of the practice act excuses supervised students of approved schools from holding a Missouri license while they learn, yet never says whether a school chartered elsewhere counts as approved. Neither text lays out a notice or approval step for out-of-state programs.
For a Rivier student, the license settles the question anyway. Rivier's Handbook ties your RN license to the site's state, and Missouri has belonged to the Nurse Licensure Compact since the 2017 statute (RSMo 335.360) took effect, with the compact in operation from January 2018. Hold a Missouri multistate license and both a Missouri clinic and Rivier's New Hampshire campus are covered.
Collaborative practice, and who precepts
AANP rates Missouri restricted. Missouri NPs sign a collaborative practice arrangement with a physician and keep one for as long as they practice. The arrangement carries its own rules on ratios, chart review and controlled-substance prescribing, and it means every Missouri NP has a physician partner.
For a Rivier FNP student, either partner can precept if Rivier's bar is met: physician or FNP credentials plus two years seeing outpatient family patients. Psychiatric students may train with any age group, inpatient or outpatient, under a psychiatrist or PMH-certified nurse who also brings two years; the PMHNP preceptor rules have the details.
A tax credit that skips NPs
Missouri's tax code does thank some clinical teachers. Under RSMo 135.690, a credit for community-based faculty preceptors is available, but only to physicians and PAs holding Missouri licenses who take Missouri medical or PA students through unpaid primary care rotations. NPs, other APRNs and nursing students sit outside it, so the credit plays no part when a Missouri clinician agrees to precept a Rivier NP student. Expect the conversation to be about teaching, schedule and fit.
Metros that cross the state line
Missouri's two largest metros both straddle a border. The St. Louis metro reaches into Illinois, and the Kansas City metro into Kansas; together their Missouri sides hold roughly three and a half million people. Springfield and Columbia are the next largest. SSM Health, CoxHealth, BJC HealthCare, MU Health Care and Mercy each run hospitals and clinics in the state, and each has its own route for student requests.
A clinic on the Illinois or Kansas side is in another state, so Rivier's license rule and that state's board rules apply there. Both are green on Rivier's guide; read the Kansas and Illinois pages first. Two other neighbors, Iowa and Tennessee, are red for the FNP and PMHNP.
After graduation, and the Nashua trips
No APRN Compact law exists in Missouri yet, which keeps your eventual NP license a Missouri-only credential. Before that, the campus calendar takes you to Nashua: FNP students attend three intensives (nine days), PMHNP students join cohort weekends three times, and AG-ACNP students log ten campus days (campus intensives).

Questions Rivier students ask
Does Missouri make Rivier register before my clinicals?
Missouri's Board rules and nursing statute set out no separate step for an out-of-state school sending students to Missouri sites. What Rivier checks is your license: an RN license valid in Missouri, which a Missouri multistate license provides. Each site then decides for itself and signs a contract with Rivier.
Can the physician in my NP's collaborative practice precept me instead?
For the FNP, yes, provided the physician practices outpatient family medicine and has done so for two years or more. Rivier accepts MDs, DOs and FNPs as primary FNP preceptors. A physician assistant in the same office may fill in but cannot be your primary preceptor.
Will my Missouri preceptor qualify for a tax credit?
Not through Missouri's preceptor credit. The statute, RSMo 135.690, was written for physicians and PAs teaching Missouri's own medical and PA students, and it does not reach NPs or nursing students. A rotation with a Rivier NP student earns your preceptor nothing under it.
I live in Kansas City, Missouri. Can my site be in Kansas?
Possibly. Kansas is green on Rivier's State Guide, but the site's state decides both the license you need and the board rules that apply. Confirm that your license is valid in Kansas and get the Clinical Practicum Coordinator's read on the site before committing.
