Rivier nurse practitioner clinicals in Illinois
On Rivier University's State Guide, Illinois is green for all of Rivier's graduate programs, the two NP tracks included. Two Illinois rules deserve early attention. Illinois is not part of the multistate licensing compact, which means your practicum runs on an Illinois-issued RN license, and Illinois's administrative code expects nursing programs based in other states to file before their students take clinical placements there.

The filing Illinois asks of out-of-state programs
Section 1300.340(n) of the Illinois Administrative Code lists what a nursing program from another state hands over when it wants Illinois clinical placements for its students. Once granted, approval lasts for two years; renewal is possible, and the program reports every year.

- The executed contract with the clinical facility
- Forms on faculty qualifications and preceptors
Where the provision sits matters: it lives among Illinois's RN program-approval rules and never says whether graduate or APRN education is covered. Rivier, not you, would handle any filing, so ask the Program Director where Rivier stands before you settle on an Illinois site.
Illinois wants the executed facility contract, and Rivier's Handbook allows 30 days for contracts.
Your license: Illinois-issued
Compact membership is absent in Illinois, and NCSBN's map lists no bill pending. A multistate license, whether Indiana issued it or another compact state did, earns you no Illinois privilege. At an Illinois site, the license that satisfies Rivier's practicum-state rule is an Illinois RN license. No APRN Compact statute exists in Illinois either, so your later APRN license will be an Illinois application too.
The reverse also holds: a license from Illinois is good only inside Illinois, and New Hampshire sits beyond it. Rivier's 2018 practicum form tied FNP campus work to a New Hampshire RN license, so ask the Program Director how that applies before your first intensive. What Illinois expects of your preceptor
Paragraph (j) of the same section addresses facility staff who precept. Before a staff member precepts, program faculty sign off on that person and provide an orientation. While you care for patients, the preceptor stays on hand and holds an RN license current for whatever state you are practicing in.
Rivier's track rules come on top. Two years in practice is Rivier's minimum for FNP and PMHNP preceptors alike, and the FNP preceptor requirements list who qualifies. Illinois also gives APRN preceptors something back: precepting an APRN student for an academic semester or quarter counts for 10 hours of continuing education toward license renewal, to a cap of 30 per renewal period, with the paperwork supplied by the student's school.
Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and the St. Louis side
Most Illinoisans live in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro. Downstate, Peoria, Rockford and the Illinois counties of the St. Louis metro are the next markets. Students often research Endeavor Health, UChicago Medicine, Northwestern Medicine, Advocate Health Care and OSF HealthCare.
On AANP's scale Illinois is reduced practice. Some settings require a physician collaboration agreement, and prescribing from the Schedule II and benzodiazepine lists brings extra conditions. Under Rivier's criteria, the NP and the physician in such a practice can each precept you.

Questions Rivier students ask
Will an Indiana multistate license cover a Rivier practicum in Illinois?
It will not. With Illinois outside the compact, multistate licenses issued by Indiana or any other member state carry no practice privilege across the Illinois line. Illinois sites require the state's own RN license, which is also what Rivier asks for in the practicum state. Put that application early in your planning.
Does Rivier have to file with Illinois before my practicum?
Illinois's rule on out-of-state programs asks for a five-part filing, the facility contract and preceptor forms among the items, and an approval lasts two years. Because the rule sits in the RN program-approval section and is silent on graduate programs, the Program Director is the one to confirm Rivier's status.
What does an Illinois APRN preceptor get for teaching me?
Illinois counts precepting toward APRN license renewal: one APRN student for an academic semester or quarter earns 10 CE hours, up to 30 in a renewal period. Under the rule, the documentation comes from the student's school, so mention the credit when you first ask.
Is Illinois a reduced practice state for NPs?
Yes, on AANP's map. Collaborative agreements with physicians apply to Illinois NPs in some settings, and prescribing some Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines takes added practice or CE and a consultative relationship. Rivier's rules let either the NP or the physician in such a practice serve as your preceptor.
