Rivier University's online NP tracks from New Jersey
For graduate study, New Jersey is green across Rivier University's State Guide, so FNP, PMHNP, Nursing Education, Leadership and DNP students can apply from anywhere in the state and complete practicums there. New Jersey packs a great deal of health care into a small area; the work is finding one clinician with the time, the title and the years in practice that Rivier requires.

Neighbors differ. New York is yellow on the guide for the NP tracks, meaning a call to the Program Director first, and Delaware does not appear on the guide at all. Pennsylvania is green; see the Pennsylvania page. If you commute across a line, the site's state is the one that counts.
Clinicals here as a student of an out-of-state school
Look in chapter 37 of Title 13 of the state's administrative code and you find New Jersey's rules for nursing education. Its first subchapter explains how the Board accredits schools that hold a license from New Jersey's higher education commission, and its clause on clinical agencies elsewhere, 1.10(c), deals with New Jersey students heading out of state, the reverse of your case. Those rules speak to home-grown schools, not visiting ones.
In practice, the sites set the terms. Each hospital, practice or clinic decides whether to host a student from another state, and Rivier signs an agreement with each one before your hours begin; affiliation agreements explains the timing. Ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator whether anything further applies before you commit to a New Jersey site.
Joint protocols and choosing a preceptor
AANP places New Jersey in the reduced practice group. Prescribing and ordering by an NP there rest on joint protocols agreed with a collaborating physician. When that physician works in the same practice, one office can offer two possible preceptors.
Both still have to clear Rivier's bar. Family students need a physician or FNP two years into outpatient family practice; psychiatric students need a psychiatrist or a nurse with PMH certification and equal time in the field. A PA may help cover FNP days but cannot be your primary preceptor. The FNP preceptor rules list the settings Rivier accepts and the ones it does not.
Where New Jersey NP students look
More than seven million New Jersey residents fall inside the New York metro's borders, while greater Philadelphia takes in roughly 1.4 million more. The Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City areas are smaller markets with practices of their own.
Hospital networks with a big New Jersey presence include RWJBarnabas Health, Virtua Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Camden's Cooper University Health Care and Atlantic Health System. Their student policies differ from one to the next, so use them as leads and give independent family and psychiatric practices equal weight.
Your license and the Nashua intensives
New Jersey's compact membership took effect in November 2021. Whether your own license is multistate or single-state decides whether it also covers sites in other compact states, and your license record shows which type you hold. For a New Jersey site, Rivier's rule is simple: an RN license valid in New Jersey. APRN Compact legislation has not passed here.
The campus trips are short but fixed. FNP intensives come three times and total nine days, PMHNP students travel for three cohort weekends, and AG-ACNP students plan on ten days. The campus intensives page has the 2026-27 FNP dates.

Questions Rivier students ask
Can I take Rivier's online PMHNP from New Jersey?
Yes. The PMHNP column is green for New Jersey, whether you enter through the MSN or the certificate. Your preceptor, found by you, would be a psychiatrist or PMH-certified nurse at least two years into practice; you would also join your cohort in Nashua three weekends and hold an RN license valid in New Jersey.
Could my practicum be in New York City while I live in New Jersey?
Rivier's State Guide shows New York in yellow for both NP tracks, so the Program Director has to weigh in first. A Manhattan site would also need an RN license valid in New York, since Rivier ties the license to the site's state. Settle both before contacting anyone across the Hudson.
Does New Jersey's Board have to approve Rivier before my clinicals?
Chapter 37's program rules are written around New Jersey-licensed schools. The practical gate is the site: each one decides whether to host you and signs a contract with Rivier first. Ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator whether anything else applies to your placement.
Does my New Jersey license cover Rivier's campus days?
A New Jersey multistate license is recognized in New Hampshire, which is also a compact state. If your license is single-state, ask the Program Director how Rivier treats campus days, since a 2018 Rivier form spoke of New Hampshire licensure for FNP campus activities.
