Rivier University's State Guide shows Ohio green for the FNP, the PMHNP and every other graduate program, so Ohioans can study online and train at home. Ohio's board runs no approval step for schools elsewhere. What shapes an Ohio practicum instead is how the state's nurse practitioners collaborate with physicians, and one line in the student exemption about who supervises.

The student exemption, read closely
Ohio handles out-of-state programs by exempting their students rather than approving the school. The relevant clause, 4723.32(F), shields APRN students from Ohio's licensing requirement while they work under their program's authority, provided the program prepares them to sit a national certification exam (a qualifying master's or doctoral degree also counts).
Read the supervision wording twice. It expects the person supervising you to be an advanced practice nurse, and it names three roles that person can hold for the program: faculty, teaching assistant, preceptor. Rivier's Handbook also allows MDs and DOs to precept the FNP and psychiatrists to precept the PMHNP, so when your best Ohio lead is a physician, raise the statute with the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before the Preceptor Request Form is filed.
Collaborative practice and Ohio's health systems
AANP puts Ohio in its reduced practice tier. Every Ohio NP keeps what the state calls a standard care arrangement, a formal collaboration with a physician or podiatrist that lasts the whole career, and Schedule II prescribing has limits on setting. If you intend to practice in Ohio, watching that partnership from inside a preceptor's clinic is useful preparation.
For system names, Cleveland offers Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, Columbus has OhioHealth, and Cincinnati is home base for Bon Secours Mercy Health. The Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center is another large name, and Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek rounds out the main metros. Each organization decides how it treats students from other schools.
Licensing for Ohio residents
Ohio began issuing multistate licenses when it implemented the compact at the start of 2023. Hold one and you meet Rivier's rule that the RN license match the practicum state; it also reaches New Hampshire, where an older Rivier practicum form asked FNP students on campus to hold a New Hampshire or compact license. Ohio is not among the APRN Compact states. Your time in Nashua is short: nine FNP days over three intensives, three PMHNP weekends as a cohort, or ten AG-ACNP days.

Questions Rivier students ask
Is Rivier's online PMHNP open to Ohio residents?
Yes; the PMHNP MSN and its post-master's certificate are both green for Ohio. Rivier's PMHNP preceptor is either a psychiatrist or a nurse holding PMH certification, two years into practice at minimum. Ohio's exemption pictures APRN supervision, so a PMH-certified nurse practitioner lines up with its wording most cleanly; check with the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before building your plan around a psychiatrist.
Does Ohio require Rivier to register before my clinicals?
Nothing in Ohio's nursing statute makes a school from another state register with the Board or notify it before students arrive; your authority to practice as a student comes from the exemption in section 4723.32. Rivier's own sequence still applies: graduate faculty accept the preceptor and site, the contract is signed, and the coordinator confirms both before a single hour counts.
I live in a different compact state. Can I use an Ohio site?
Ohio's board describes the compact this way: one multistate license, issued by your primary state of residence, lets you practice across member states, Ohio among them. Because Rivier's Handbook ties your license to the practicum state, ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator to confirm that your out-of-state multistate license satisfies it.
What does reduced practice in Ohio mean for my FNP preceptor?
Ohio NPs work within a standing arrangement with a physician or podiatrist for their whole careers. Rivier's FNP standard sits on top of that: your primary preceptor still has to be an outpatient family practice clinician, whether physician or FNP, with two or more years of experience. A PA may step in occasionally, but only as a substitute.
