Studying with Rivier from North Dakota
Rivier University's State Guide gives North Dakota a green light for all five graduate programs, from the FNP and PMHNP to the DNP, so an online Rivier student can live there and train locally. North Dakota adds a checkpoint of its own: the state Board of Nursing must recognize a distance program before its students start clinical work in a North Dakota facility, graduate NP programs included, with a roster filed every semester.

NDBON recognition, semester by semester
North Dakota treats a school from another state that trains future LPNs, RNs or APRNs in its facilities as a distance program needing Board recognition, and Rivier's NP tracks fit that description. The program applies a full 60 days before the first student activity and pays a yearly graduate fee. State law then exempts the students of a recognized program, on written notice to the Board and as clinical space allows.
Each semester, before anyone starts, a recognized program sends NDBON:
- the students' names and their North Dakota or multistate license information
- which facilities and which courses
- who precepts and who teaches, with resumes and licenses
- signed affiliation agreements
- proof from every facility that it can fit the student in
Rivier files this, yet the content comes from you and your preceptor, so an early placement pays off here. The Board also looks for NC-SARA approval or State Board of Higher Education authorization, and Rivier belongs to NC-SARA.
Full practice, and where North Dakota NP students look
North Dakota sits in AANP's full practice tier. In practical terms, an FNP who runs an outpatient family practice can be your primary preceptor just as an MD or DO can, provided the two-year minimum in Rivier's FNP preceptor rules is met. PMHNP students look for psychiatrists and PMH-certified nurses who have practiced two years or longer.
The state's metro areas are Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot. Fargo's options include Essentia Health-Fargo and Sanford Broadway Medical Center; Bismarck has a Sanford medical center too, plus CHI St. Alexius Health; Grand Forks has Altru Health System, and Minot has Trinity Health. Whether any of them hosts a Rivier student is that system's decision.
Licenses: one compact in force, one waiting
Rivier ties your RN license to the practicum's location, so a North Dakota site calls for a license good in North Dakota. North Dakota has issued multistate licenses under the current compact since its 2018 relaunch, so a resident's license settles the question at home and also stretches to New Hampshire. The license page covers the less common cases.
The APRN Compact is a different story. North Dakota signed on in 2021, yet the compact needs seven member states to operate and has five, so for the time being each state licenses its own NPs.
Getting to Nashua
Coursework happens online, but the NP tracks still gather in Nashua: nine FNP days over three intensives (the fall 2026 block opens August 24), a trio of PMHNP weekends, or ten days for the AG-ACNP. From Fargo or Bismarck that usually means flying. A move out of state mid-program means telling the Dean, in writing, no later than 90 days beforehand.

Questions Rivier students ask
Can I do Rivier's online FNP from North Dakota?
Yes. North Dakota is green for the FNP, whether you enter the MSN or the post-master's certificate. You study online, arrange a practicum near home under an RN license that works in North Dakota, and fly to Nashua for three short intensives. Before your first clinical day, the state also expects Rivier to hold NDBON recognition.
Does NDBON's recognition cover nurse practitioner programs?
It does. NDBON's definition takes in programs preparing students for licensure as an LPN, an RN or an APRN, so Rivier's FNP, PMHNP and AG-ACNP tracks sit inside it, while RN-BSN programs are not described as covered. Recognition is Rivier's job rather than yours; the Clinical Practicum Coordinator can tell you where it stands before you sign a North Dakota preceptor.
Could a PA in Fargo serve as my FNP preceptor?
Only for the odd day. Rivier's Handbook allows a PA as a fill-in, not as the primary. The primary must work in outpatient family practice as an MD, DO or FNP and bring at least two years of practice, and North Dakota's full practice status makes an FNP-owned clinic a fair place to look.
What would the APRN Compact change for a North Dakota NP?
Nothing yet. North Dakota enacted it on March 9, 2021; Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota and Delaware are the other enacting states, and seven are required before any multistate APRN license exists. For now the credential that crosses borders is your RN license, carried by the Nurse Licensure Compact.
