South Carolina practicums for Rivier NP students
Rivier University's State Guide lists South Carolina as green for the FNP, PMHNP, Nursing Education, Leadership and DNP. The state Board does screen schools from other states before certain clinicals, but only those training students toward initial licensure; APRN programs go unmentioned. Two other facts weigh more on an NP search: restricted practice, and a tax credit that rewards only preceptors of students at South Carolina schools.

A yellow pre-licensure cell and a green RN-BSN cell complete the row. The chart has no AG-ACNP column, so acute care applicants should ask the Program Director before applying from South Carolina. The State Guide explained.
Regulation 91-6: a pre-licensure rule
South Carolina's Regulation 91-6 applies when a program based in another state wants to run clinicals that lead to initial licensure. Before those clinicals begin, the Board must approve it, and it has to keep full approval in its home state, put a written agreement in place with each clinical site and run precepted experiences by South Carolina's standards.
The regulation's text does not reach APRN or RN-to-BSN programs. For NP students, the steps to plan are Rivier's: a qualified preceptor, the Preceptor Request Form, and the contract between Rivier and the site, which the Handbook gives 30 days. How those contracts work.
Restricted practice, and a credit Rivier preceptors miss
AANP places South Carolina in the restricted tier. Delegated acts by a South Carolina NP rest on a practice agreement with a physician, and the state caps the supply of controlled substances an NP may provide. Rivier lets an MD or DO in outpatient family practice serve as primary FNP preceptor and a psychiatrist precept the PMHNP, so physician practices deserve space on your list beside NP-led clinics.
Only rotations for students enrolled at South Carolina's own public or independent colleges qualify for the state's preceptor tax credit and deduction under S.C. Code § 12-6-3800, now extended through tax year 2029. Someone precepting a Rivier student cannot claim it, so mention that up front; candor early keeps goodwill later.

Licensing and campus travel
South Carolina residents can hold a multistate RN license; the state has taken part in the current compact since it launched in 2018. With one, you meet Rivier's practicum-state rule and can work on campus in New Hampshire. South Carolina has no APRN Compact law. RN license rules.
FNP students make three trips to Nashua for nine days in all; PMHNP students come for three weekends and AG-ACNP students for ten days.

Questions Rivier students ask
Will my South Carolina preceptor get the tax credit for precepting a Rivier student?
No. South Carolina limits the credit to rotations for students enrolled at its own public or independent institutions, and it layers on more conditions: the preceptor must be uncompensated, take two or more rotations a year, participate in Medicaid with a minimum patient count, and host rotations of 160 hours or longer in listed settings. A Rivier student's rotation falls outside it.
Is South Carolina green for Rivier's Nursing Education MSN?
Yes, and the post-master's certificate in Nursing Education shares that green. The practicum preceptor must be an RN holding a master's degree who works as a nurse educator, in a hospital or an academic setting. The course itself is NURS 559P, taken with its seminar, NURS 559S.
Can a psychiatrist be my PMHNP preceptor in South Carolina?
Yes, if the psychiatrist has two or more years in practice; Rivier also accepts a nurse certified in psychiatric mental health. Any age group works, inpatient or outpatient, though Rivier strongly suggests experience across the lifespan, from children to older adults, when you plan your three practicums.
Does South Carolina require out-of-state faculty to be licensed there?
For pre-licensure programs approved under Regulation 91-6, yes: the faculty member supervising on site and on shift needs a South Carolina or compact license, and an approved program has 15 days to notify the Board in writing of a compliance change. APRN programs fall outside that regulation, and in an NP practicum the person beside you day to day is your preceptor.
