Rivier University's online NP tracks in Georgia
Georgia shows green for every Rivier University graduate program on the State Guide, the FNP and PMHNP among them. Rivier needs no sign-off from the Georgia Board of Nursing to place you, because that Board leaves post-licensure education alone. Its attention goes to credentials: the license you carry, the one your preceptor carries, and the APRN authorization of the nurse who instructs you clinically.

Georgia's colors on the Rivier guide
How the January 2025 guide scores Georgia:
| Rivier program | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Family NP, MSN or certificate | Green | OK to accept |
| Psychiatric-Mental Health NP, MSN or certificate | Green | OK to accept |
| Nursing Education | Green | OK to accept |
| Leadership in Health Systems Management | Green | OK to accept |
| Doctor of Nursing Practice | Green | OK to accept |
| ASN/BSN pre-licensure | Yellow | Limiting criteria: call the program director |
| RN to BSN | Green | OK to accept |
Acceptance is all the chart covers. It is not a Georgia licensure ruling, and it has no AG-ACNP column, so acute care applicants should ask the Program Director about Georgia directly. The State Guide page explains the color key.
Licenses, not program approval
Post-licensure education sits outside the Georgia Board's remit, by its own account on its nursing education page, and APRN programs count as post-licensure. The upshot for a Rivier NP student: no Board approval stands between Rivier and a Georgia placement. The Board's conditions attach to people instead. If you live in Georgia, study with a school elsewhere and log clinical time in Georgia, your license must be Georgia-issued or a compact state's multistate license, and the same goes for anyone who teaches or precepts you there, on site or remotely.
Undergraduate pre-licensure clinicals are another matter: per the Board, Georgia currently approves none from programs based outside the state or delivered online, and Rivier's ASN/BSN column is yellow.
The APRN instruction rule and physician preceptors
One more Board sentence matters for NP students: in post-licensure APRN programs, the person conducting clinical instruction is to be a nurse authorized as an APRN in Georgia. Rivier's Handbook is broader: an MD or DO in outpatient family practice can precept FNP students, and a psychiatrist can precept PMHNP students. Before you build a Georgia placement around a physician, ask the Program Director and the Clinical Practicum Coordinator how Rivier applies the Board's statement.
One path satisfies both documents at once: a Georgia-authorized FNP whose outpatient family practice goes back two years or more, or, for PMHNP students, a psychiatric-certified NP with the same two years behind them. The FNP preceptor requirements cover the rest of Rivier's test, including the limit on PAs.
In Georgia, check the preceptor's APRN authorization first.
Restricted practice, big systems and a tax credit
Georgia lands in AANP's restricted column: a physician delegates to or supervises each NP, and Schedule II prescribing by NPs is capped. Metro Atlanta holds most of the practices, while Augusta, Savannah and Columbus form the next tier. Students weighing large systems tend to look at Northside Hospital, Wellstar Health System, Emory Healthcare, Piedmont Healthcare or Grady Health System, each with its own student rules.
Unpaid community preceptors in Georgia can earn a state tax credit through PTIP, the Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, if they are Georgia-licensed APRNs, PAs or physicians. It counts only rotations for students of Georgia schools, so precepting a Rivier student earns nothing under it.
Your license, the compact and campus time
Georgia has run the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 2018. A multistate license from Georgia covers Georgia sites, meets Rivier's practicum-state rule, and stretches to New Hampshire, a fellow compact member. The APRN Compact is not law in Georgia, so APRN authorization after graduation will come from the Georgia Board itself.
Rivier's NP tracks include campus days in Nashua: the FNP asks for nine, split across three intensives; PMHNP students gather for weekends as a cohort; the AG-ACNP asks for ten. If you move to Georgia partway through, the Dean needs written notice at least 90 days ahead; see moving during your program.
Why Georgia students choose us
Every Georgia search we run is built around the Board's license rules. Before we introduce you, we confirm that each candidate holds a Georgia or multistate RN license and, for an NP, Georgia APRN authorization. We match candidates to Rivier's track criteria, pull together the CV and license documents the Preceptor Request Form requires, and time the work to Rivier's four-month lead. Rivier's faculty make the final site decision, and our file gives them what they need in one pass. The form below opens the conversation, and how it works walks you through our side.
Questions Rivier students ask
Does Rivier need Georgia Board approval for my NP practicum?
No. By the Georgia Board of Nursing's own description, post-licensure programs, NP programs among them, fall outside what it approves or regulates. Its conditions land on individuals: you, your faculty and your preceptor each need a license that is Georgia-issued or multistate.
Can a Georgia physician be my Rivier FNP preceptor?
Rivier's Handbook admits physicians, MD or DO, from outpatient family medicine who have practiced for two years. Georgia's Board, however, expects APRN clinical instruction to be conducted by a nurse holding Georgia APRN authorization. Ask the Program Director how Rivier reconciles the two before you commit to a physician-only placement.
Will my Georgia preceptor get the state tax credit?
Not for a Rivier student. The credit counts rotations only for students of Georgia's own schools. Georgia AHEC reports that HB 144 reworked and extended the program, with annual registration required from 2026 onward; eligibility remains tied to in-state programs.
What license covers a Rivier practicum in Georgia?
Either Georgia's own RN license or a multistate one issued by a different compact state; Georgia began implementing the compact in 2018. Rivier asks for a license valid in the practicum state along with your clinical requirements, which fall due four months before practicum courses.
