Iowa on Rivier's State Guide: five graduate programs red, the RN-BSN open
Rivier University is unable to accept Iowa residents into its FNP or PMHNP, and the same red status, which Rivier ties to prohibitive barriers, covers Nursing Education, Leadership and the DNP. Of Rivier's online programs, only the RN-BSN is green for Iowa; on-campus pre-licensure study is yellow.

The short answer for Iowa nurses
An Iowa RN hoping to become a nurse practitioner through Rivier will not find a route on the current guide. The FNP and PMHNP are red whether you pick the MSN or the certificate that follows a master's, and nothing on the chart carves out Des Moines, Cedar Rapids or any other part of the state.
What stays open is narrower: the online RN-BSN, which lists no practicum course. Iowa nurses who wonder about keeping an Iowa address while completing practicums in a state that Rivier's chart does accept should put that to Rivier before anything else. It depends on Rivier's own admission rules and on an RN license where the practicum sits, and the guide itself makes no such offer.

Moving to Iowa once you are enrolled
A Rivier NP student in a green state who takes a job in Iowa City or the Quad Cities is moving into a red practicum state. Under the Handbook, the Dean must have your change of state in writing with at least 90 days to spare, and uncovering barriers is left to you.
Because Iowa is red in every graduate column, raise the move early with your Program Director and with the coordinator who confirms practicum contracts, and read what a mid-program move involves. NP students also keep returning to Nashua for campus intensives, nine days across the FNP and three weekends in the PMHNP, wherever home ends up.
Iowa's rules for outside programs, licensing and practice
Iowa leaves program approval to others. Its Board of Nursing, which sits inside the state's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, grants no approval to schools headquartered in other states. Its criteria instead send such schools to the Bureau of Iowa College Aid for permission to operate, bind them to Iowa law on top of home-state rules, let the Board request data, and call for clinical contracts that split responsibilities, keep teaching under faculty control, and provide for annual review and for ending the arrangement.
Every faculty member or preceptor working with students in Iowa carries a current Iowa or multistate license, and so does each post-licensure student. At the NP level, rule 481 IAC 616.16 wants most preceptorship time spent beside an ARNP or physician who shares the student's role and population, with the written preceptorship agreement revisited annually.
- Nurse practitioners in Iowa carry the ARNP title, and AANP counts Iowa among its full practice states.
- Iowa implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018; an Iowa-issued multistate RN license works in the other compact states.
- Iowa has not enacted the APRN Compact.
- Precepting a student in an organized preceptorship can earn an Iowa nurse continuing education credit toward license renewal, documented by the school.

Questions Rivier students ask
Can I do Rivier's online PMHNP from Iowa?
No. Rivier's State Guide marks the PMHNP red for Iowa, in its MSN form and its certificate form, and red is how Rivier flags a state whose barriers it cannot get past. Four more columns share it (FNP, Nursing Education, Leadership and DNP), which leaves the RN-BSN as the one green online option for Iowa residents.
Is Rivier's DNP available to Iowa nurses?
Not on the current guide. Iowa is one of three states where Rivier marks the DNP red, alongside California and Washington. In many other states the DNP shows green or yellow, which is why an Iowa nurse should not generalize from a colleague's answer somewhere else.
Does Iowa require an Iowa license for clinicals there?
Yes, or a compact equivalent. Iowa's page on out-of-state programs says post-licensure students attending clinicals in the state need a current license from Iowa or a multistate one, and they practice under Iowa Code while there. Why is Iowa red if its board does not approve out-of-state programs?
The Board of Nursing's approach and Rivier's color answer different questions. Rivier's guide shows a color for each program without giving reasons state by state, and that color is what decides admission. If you want to understand Iowa's red cell, take it up with the Program Director.
