Rivier University from Kentucky: open to every graduate track
Kentucky is green on Rivier University's State Guide for all five graduate columns and the RN-BSN; only on-campus pre-licensure study shows yellow. Kentucky's nursing board does not require an out-of-state school to win its approval before students train there, which leaves one real job: a Kentucky preceptor who fits Rivier's track rules and carries the Kentucky credentials the board looks for.

Rivier's State Guide, updated January 2025, tells you whether Rivier can take a student who lives in a given state.

There is no AG-ACNP column, so an acute care applicant in Louisville or Lexington should ask the Program Director directly. Green signals acceptance, not a ruling on Kentucky licensure; the State Guide page explains the difference.
What KBN asks of a school outside Kentucky
Kentucky's Board of Nursing (KBN) is plain about its reach. Schools based in other states need no KBN approval, and that holds when a school's sole footprint in Kentucky is students at clinical sites. The Board's oversight covers pre-licensure programs born inside the state, plus graduate programs that end in licensure.
Two further points in the Board's overview touch Rivier students. KRS 314.101, as KBN reads it, lets a nurse licensed elsewhere complete a Kentucky rotation if the school belongs to SARA, and the 2025-26 catalog names Rivier an NC-SARA member. The overview also sets a bar for the people guiding you: an NP precepting for an online MSN or DNP program in Kentucky needs clear, current Kentucky RN and APRN licenses, or only the APRN license when home is another compact state.
Reduced practice and who can precept you
On AANP's map, Kentucky sits in the reduced practice group. Prescribing ties most NPs to a physician through two written agreements, one for controlled drugs and one for the rest, with Board exemptions possible, and a brand-new NP's first year carries limits on where they may work.
Rivier's own bar lines up with that. For NURS 511, look for an MD, DO or FNP whose outpatient family practice career already spans two years; a first-year NP falls short on time alone. PMHNP students look for a psychiatrist or PMH-certified nurse with equal seniority. When family practice is thin in your county, the FNP preceptor rules name the fallback settings Rivier allows.
Louisville, Lexington and Northern Kentucky
Census figures put the biggest Kentucky populations in greater Louisville, greater Lexington, the counties that belong to the Cincinnati metro, and Bowling Green. Among the large employers of clinicians are St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Norton Healthcare, UK HealthCare at the University of Kentucky, Baptist Health, whose footprint reaches into Southern Indiana, and UofL Health.
Treat those names as leads, since every system writes its own student rules. Small family practices and community clinics deserve equal space on your list. Once someone says yes, Rivier's contract with the site needs 30 days.
Your license, and the trip to Nashua
Under Rivier's Handbook, your RN license must be good in whichever state hosts the practicum. Kentucky has been a Nurse Licensure Compact member since 2018, so a multistate license issued at home covers a Kentucky clinic and Rivier's New Hampshire campus alike. The separate APRN Compact has not passed in Kentucky, so the NP license you earn later is issued state by state.
NP study also brings you to Nashua. Count on three FNP intensives worth nine days in all; PMHNP students instead meet as a cohort over three weekends, and the acute care track asks for ten days. Book time off as soon as the campus intensive dates are set.

Questions Rivier students ask
Can I do my Rivier FNP clinicals in Kentucky?
Yes. The FNP column shows green for Kentucky, and every 2026 graduate program sheet lets students complete practicums near home. Three things stay with you: securing the preceptor under Rivier's Practicum Placement Policy, keeping an RN license that is valid in Kentucky, and waiting for graduate faculty to approve the site before counting hours.
Must KBN sign off on Rivier before my Kentucky clinicals?
No approval is needed from KBN for a school outside Kentucky, the Board says, even when clinicals are all it does in the state. The hosting clinic or hospital still makes its own call on each student, and Rivier puts a signed contract in place with the site before you start.
Could a first-year Kentucky NP precept me?
Rivier's Handbook wants two years in practice from a primary FNP or PMHNP preceptor, so a first-year NP will not qualify yet. Kentucky's own first-year limits on new NPs point the same way. Aim for a clinician with a few years behind them.
My home is in Northern Kentucky. Could I train in Cincinnati?
A clinic across the river sits in Ohio, and Rivier judges the license by the site's state, so you would need one valid in Ohio and Ohio's rules would govern. Read the Ohio page for its State Guide color, then run the site past the Clinical Practicum Coordinator ahead of any promise to a preceptor.
